Buyer's guide

Personalised coasters: a buyer's guide to materials, printing & longevity

Most personalised coaster shops look the same online. The thing that decides whether the set you order ends up framed on a kitchen table or pushed to the back of a drawer is almost never the artwork — it's the material and the print method. Here's what to look for, written by a UK maker who prints coasters every day.

1. Material is the single biggest decision

A personalised coaster is only as good as the surface it's printed on. Four common options, ranked by how they actually perform once they're on someone's kitchen table:

Cork (premium 5mm Portuguese)

Pros: Heat-resistant, kind to wooden surfaces, weighty in the hand, takes full-colour print beautifully, sustainable. Our choice.

Cons: Edges can scuff on cheaper cork — look for 5mm minimum and a rounded bevel.

Best all-round for personalised gift coasters.

Slate

Pros: Premium feel, heavy, distinctive.

Cons: Scratches wooden surfaces unless backed, cold to the touch, limited print options (mostly laser engraving), heavy to post.

Beautiful for static use; not ideal for party favours or postal gifts.

Ceramic / sandstone

Pros: Bright print, low cost, common on print-on-demand sites.

Cons: Cracks if dropped, no thermal cushion (rings appear on the table), corners chip.

Cheap and cheerful — not what you want for a milestone gift.

MDF / hardboard

Pros: Cheapest option, takes any print.

Cons: Swells if it gets wet, edges chip, feels light and disposable.

Avoid for anything you want kept beyond a year.

2. The print method decides how long the artwork lives

"Printed" is doing a lot of work in most product descriptions. The three methods you will actually encounter:

Flatbed UV print

A UV-cured ink is laid directly onto the coaster surface and flashed solid. Full-colour, photo-quality, fade-resistant. This is what we use — and what most reputable UK personalised-coaster makers use.

Laser engraving

A laser burns the design into the surface. Permanent, but monochrome only — no colour. Great for slate, leather, wood. Limited for full-colour artwork.

Sublimation

Ink is heat-transferred from a printed sheet into a polymer coating. Bright colours, but only works on coated/ceramic substrates and the image can scratch over time.

3. What "personalised" should actually include

The cheapest personalised coasters are really templated coasters — a fixed design with one line of text swapped. Nothing wrong with that for a £6 stocking filler, but if you are buying coasters as a milestone gift, a wedding favour, or a corporate piece, you want the design built around your idea, not the other way round.

A proper personalised order should include at minimum: a digital proof you can share with the person you're buying with; one or two free rounds of revisions; and the artwork held on file so you can reorder later without paying to redesign.

4. Longevity: what kills a personalised coaster

Three things end a personalised coaster early: water (warps MDF, lifts thin paper-based coatings), the dishwasher (heat and detergent strip almost any print given enough cycles), and direct sunlight on a windowsill (UV fades non-UV-cured inks within a year).

Wipe-clean with a damp cloth, kept out of permanent sun, a 5mm cork coaster with flatbed UV print will look the same in five years as it did the day it arrived.

5. The pre-order checklist

Before you press "buy" on any personalised coaster order, confirm:

  • Material is at least 4mm thick and either cork or slate.
  • Print method is named (flatbed UV, sublimation, laser) — not just "printed".
  • Proof is sent before printing, with at least one round of free revisions.
  • Origin is clear — where is it printed, by whom?
  • Minimum order is sensible for your event (54 is normal for cork; 1-off works for sublimated mugs but rarely for coasters).
  • Lead time is in writing — and matches your event date.
  • Care instructions are honest — wipe clean only, no dishwasher.
