Birthday gifts by post: what actually arrives on time in the UK
Sending a birthday present in the post is mostly a logistics problem dressed up as a shopping problem. Pick the wrong shape and it needs a signature. Pick the wrong service and it lands two days late. Here is how we get gifts through UK letterboxes on the right day — written from the packing bench, not a marketing deck.
Letterbox-sized beats impressive-sized
A Large Letter box under 25mm deep goes through the door with nobody home. A parcel one millimetre thicker becomes a missed-delivery card and a queue at the sorting office on their birthday. Depth matters far more than what is inside.
Order four to five working days out
Tracked 48 is two to three working days, Tracked 24 is usually next day — neither is a guarantee. Working days exclude Sundays and bank holidays, which is where most late birthday gifts actually go wrong.
Make the sender obvious
The single most common complaint about posted gifts is a box arriving with no idea who sent it. Check the seller hand-writes a To/From card, or add a note yourself at checkout.
Watch the postage-to-gift ratio
Paying £5.95 courier on a £12 present is a bad trade. Flat, light gifts ship for around £2 tracked, which means more of your budget lands in the box rather than in the postage.

Six birthday gifts that post well — and their catch
A boxed coaster gift set
Useful every day, unbreakable in the post, and flat enough for a letterbox. A two- or four-coaster Kraft box is the format we send most — around £15–£20 delivered, and it survives being shoved through a stiff door.
Letterbox brownies or sweets
Reliable and always welcome, but consumed within a week and increasingly generic. Good as a same-week rescue when you have forgotten a birthday; less memorable as the main gift.
A print or small piece of art
Posts flat in a tube or stiffened mailer. The catch is wall space and taste — buy this only if you know their house.
Jewellery and small accessories
Genuinely giftable at post-friendly sizes. Sizing risk on rings and bracelets is the reason a lot of these come back.
Seeds, bulbs and small plants
Cheap, thoughtful and light. Seasonal though — a bare-root plant posted in July arrives sad.
A subscription first box
Coffee, hot sauce, books. Fine for someone with a known obsession, awkward if they then have to cancel a recurring payment.
Sending it straight to the recipient
If you are not seeing them on the day, send the gift direct. Put their address in as the delivery address and your own as billing. Anything worth buying from will keep prices and invoices out of the box — the recipient should never see what you paid.
The part most sellers get wrong is the card. An unbranded box with no note leaves someone guessing who it came from. We hand-write the To and From on a Happy Birthday card and sign it in your name, which is a small thing that changes how the gift lands entirely.

Birthday gifts by post — FAQs
- What is the best birthday gift to send by post?
- Something flat, unbreakable and under 25mm deep so it fits a letterbox — coasters, prints, jewellery, socks or brownies. Fragile, chilled or bulky gifts need a signed-for courier and someone at home.
- How far in advance should I order?
- Four to five working days for Tracked 48, three for Tracked 24. Add a working day either side of a bank holiday weekend.
- Will the recipient see the price?
- Not from us — no invoice or pricing goes in the box, only the gift and the hand-written card.
- Can I add a personalised message?
- Yes. Enter the To and From at checkout and we hand-write it onto the birthday card before packing.
